In Between Stillness: Notes on Tabletop Diaries

by AROUNDAROUND Team

In ara contemporary, Wedhar Riyadi presents his solo exhibition, In Between Stillness. This exhibition features his latest work, Tabletop Diaries, which emerged from his observations during the pandemic. In this work, he captures the composition of ordinary household objects that he first shaped from clay. However, there are no straightforward still lifes, for he removes any characteristics or labels, leaving only monochrome forms that reveal meaning through silence and emptiness, and the way viewers respond to them.

The series continues Riyadi’s explorations in bringing together opposing contexts within one composition. In the past, he painted portraits with elements of comical characters, but here he focuses on the tension between the natural and artificial. Still-life painting has long been used to remind people of the shortness of life through, for example, withered flowers or bitten fruits. In a similar manner, Riyadi approaches this by showing marks of human presence through the clay’s pinched surfaces, also with traces of touch, wear, stains, scratches, and patina. Clay, a material that comes from soil, symbolises both beginnings and endings, reminding us of the cycles of life and loss.

Riyadi also uses very bright colours in the background of his paintings, which bring a feeling of artificiality. This creates a contrast with the earthy clay surfaces. The combination invites viewers to think about their own feelings toward nature and man-made objects. Do we value one more than the other, or do they both carry meaning in their own way?

Born in Yogyakarta, Wedhar Riyadi belongs to a generation of Indonesian artists shaped by the cultural shifts following the fall of Suharto and the flood of global popular culture. With In Between Stillness, he distils these influences into a practice that reflects on history and daily life, showing how simple objects can reveal deeper truths about existence.
